Nine Ways to Master Your Money




These past few years have been miserable for money. The stock market has tumbled, unemployment has soared, the housing market has continued to crumble, and retirement savings have shriveled away. Whew! Here’s hoping the next few years will be better!

But hope can only do so much. Hope cannot bring change; action brings change.
If one of your goals is to take control of your money (instead of letting it keep control of you), this crash course in financial basics can help guide the way. Here are nine simple, but effective, actions you can take to build a better financial future.

Method #1: Track Every Penny You Spend

The authors of Your Money or Your Life admonish readers to “keep track of every cent that comes into or goes out of your life.”
This is the best way to become conscious of how money actually comes and goes in your life as opposed to how you think it comes and goes. This is the step that somehow makes the biggest impact. It doesn’t matter how you track your spending—the most important thing is to do it.
* You can use a cash notebook.

* You can use an online tool like Wesabe, Mint, or Quicken Online.

* You can use a piece of software like Quicken or Microsoft Money.
Whichever method you choose, stick with it. Make it a habit. Don’t fudge the numbers. Record your transactions as soon as possible. Most of all, don’t judge yourself. Tracking your spending is an exercise in data collection; it’s not the appropriate time to change your habits.

Method #2: Develop a Budget

After you’ve tracked your spending for a few weeks (or months), use the data you’ve collected to develop a budget. According to The Millionaire Next Door, budgeting is one thing that sets the wealthy apart from the rest of us—55 percent of millionaires keep a budget.

Many people—myself included—fail to budget for a variety of reasons: it’s boring, we don’t think we need it, or we don’t know how. But this simple act can provide a roadmap for your money.

There are a variety of budgeting methods you can choose, from Andrew Tobias’ three-step budget to the 60 percent budget. My recent favorite (and a favorite of GRS readers) is Elizabeth Warren’s balanced money formula: 50 percent to Needs, 20 percent to Savings, and everything else to Wants. Simple but effective.

Tip! Spend less than you earn. This is the fundamental money skill. It’s common sense, yet many people never learn to do it. Only by spending less than you earn can you hope to build wealth. This is easier to do if you track your spending and develop a budget, but those steps aren’t completely necessary. Even if you do nothing else in this list, spending less than you earn can put you ahead of your peers.

Method #3: Optimize Your Accounts

For eighteen years, I was an account holder at a large national bank. I paid an eight dollar “service charge” every month, as well as many other fees. I received terrible service and earned no interest. Over the last couple of years, I’ve finally begun to optimize my accounts. If you haven’t already done so, consider the following:
* Open an online high-yield savings account. Even in this era of low interest rates, it’s still possible to earn about 3 percent on your savings. Internet favorite ING Direct currently offers a 2.50 percent APY, and FNBO Direct offers a 2.80 percent APY. These rates are about as low as they can go, and should increase in the months and years ahead. And if you don’t need as much liquidity with your investments, consider researching CD rates which may offer a higher interest rate.

* Choose a rewards checking account. Believe it or not, it’s possible to find checking accounts that pay interest. Online checking accounts generally pay between 1 percent and 3 percent, depending on your balance. But you can usually find an even better deal through your local bank or credit union. Check out this huge list of rewards checking accounts.

* Use a rewards credit card. If you have trouble with credit, it’s best to avoid plastic altogether. If you can use credit responsibly, be sure to choose a credit card that pays you. Avoid cards that carry an annual fee. Find a rewards program that matches your lifestyle. But don’t choose a card just because it offers a signup bonus or because it gives you a discount at your favorite store. Remember: your goal is to find a useful tool. Look for a long-term relationship you can live with.

It’s important to choose accounts and systems that work for you. I signed up for a rewards checking account at a local credit union, but the nearest branch is fifteen minutes out of my way. I never use it. I had to compromise by opening on online checking account instead. I earn a lower rate, but it’s an account I’ll actually use.

Tip! When optimizing your banks and credit cards, consider using multiple accounts at each institution. For example, I have ING Direct subaccounts that allow me to target my savings. I save for vacation in one account, for a car in another, and I use a third account for emergency savings.

Method #4: Start an Emergency Fund

For years, I lived paycheck to paycheck. I spent everything I earned. This worked well until something went wrong. Suddenly I’d find myself without money to pay for a car repair, or facing an expensive doctor’s bill. I financed emergencies with credit cards. I finally paid off all of this debt at the end of 2007.
After you’ve optimized your accounts, make it a priority to save for emergencies. In The Total Money Makeover, Dave Ramsey explains why he believes an emergency fund should come before anything else:
“Since I hate debt so much, people often ask why we don’t start with the debt. I used to do that when I first started teaching and counseling, but I discovered that people would stop their whole Total Money Makeover because of an emergency—they felt guilty that they had to stop debt-reducing to survive.”
After you’ve saved $1000, then you can attack your debt. Open an online high-yield savings account and add twenty or fifty dollars to your account every time you get paid. Two years ago, I opened an account at ING Direct, where it’s simple to schedule automatic deposits.

Method #5: Get Out of debt

Are you struggling under a heavy debt load from credit cards or student loans? Make it a priority to unload some of this burden this year. At the end of 2007, I said goodbye to twenty years of debt—it feels fantastic to have that weight off my shoulders.

If you have the mental discipline, you’ll save money by paying down your high-interest debt first. But if you’ve tried that method before and failed, consider using a debt snowball. Pay your debts starting with the smallest balance first. Here’s how:

1. Order your debts from lowest balance to highest balance.

2. Designate a certain amount of money to pay toward debts each month.

3. Pay the minimum payment on all debts except the one with the lowest balance.

4. Throw every other penny at the debt with the lowest balance.

5. When that debt is gone, do not alter the monthly amount used to pay debts, but throw all you can at the debt with the next-lowest balance.

The debt snowball can give you awesome psychological payoffs, keeping you motivated to stay in the game. It’s not mathematically ideal, but it worked for me (and for many others). However you choose to get out of debt, stick with it. Don’t give up.

Tip! The perfect choice is the enemy of the good. When you spend so much time looking for the “best” choice that you never actually do anything, you’re sabotaging yourself. And an ideal solution that you don’t follow through with is worse than a good solution that you’ll actually use. Choose a good option and act.

Method #6: Fund Your Retirement

The current economy gives many people the jitters. But if history is any indication, now is a great time to be buying stocks for your retirement. Take advantage of any employer-matched opportunities, such as a 401(k). Also, consider starting a Roth IRA.

If you’re young, you probably don’t think you need to start a retirement account. You’re wrong. No matter how old you are, now is the time to begin saving for retirement. The extraordinary power of compound interest favors the young—and in a big way! In The Automatic Millionaire, David Bach writes:
“The single biggest investment mistake you can make [is] not using your [retirement] plan and not maxing it out.”

After reading The Automatic Millionaire a couple years ago, I opened a Roth IRA at Sharebuilder. It was easier than opening a checking account. I managed to make the maximum contribution in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, I maxed out my 401(k).

Method #7: Automate Your Finances

For the past eighteen months, I’ve been moving toward a system of paperless personal finance. Along the way, I’m learning the value of automating routine transactions. When you make things automatic, you remove the human element, making it more difficult for you to mess things up.

The classic example is overdraft protection. By tying your checking account to your savings account, you have a safety net if you bounce a check. But there are other ways this can work for you. For example, I’ve set up automatic payments with the gas company, the cable company, and my auto insurance company. I also make automatic deposits to my online savings account.

One terrific advantage to automation: when you pay your bills and do your saving and investing automatically, it’s easy to tell how much you have left over to spend at the end of each month!

Tip! Do what works for you. There are few hard-and-fast rules in the world of personal finance. I can suggest methods that have worked for me (and for others), but only you can determine if these methods are appropriate for your own circumstances.

Method #8: Earn Extra Money

You can meet a lot of your financial goals by reducing your spending and using the right tools. But nothing supercharges your progress like a boost in income. How can you earn extra money?

* Ask for a raise. Several readers have written to tell me how they’ve given themselves a raise through ambition and ingenuity. Here’s one example.

* Switch employers. Not every employer is able or willing to offer raises, even when they’re merited. If you’re in a position where a raise isn’t possible, consider finding a new employer.

* Take a second job. Many people find that the best way to get out of a financial hole is to temporarily take a second job. Nobody wants to work more than forty hours per week, but sometimes that’s what’s needed to get out of debt or to save for a house. Just remind yourself that you’re doing this for a short time.

* Use your hobbies. Yes, it’s possible to have moneymaking hobbies. You’re not going to get rich playing World of Warcraft, but many people use productive hobbies to earn a little extra income.

* Volunteer for medical research. Last summer, I earned $120 for a couple of hours spent participating in medical research. My colleague Donna Freedman has earned extra cash by giving blood and watching porn (though not at the same time).

* Sell things. When I decided to get out of debt, one of my first steps was to sell a bunch of the stuff I’d bought with that $35,000. I used eBay, Craigslist, garage sales, and the Amazon Marketplace to sell the things I no longer needed or wanted. The money I earned jump-started my debt reduction.
Another effective way to increase your income is to pursue entrepreneurship. While working to defeat my debt, I started a small computer-consulting business. It didn’t generate a lot of income, but it did provide $2,000 a year that I wouldn’t have had otherwise!

Method #9: Educate Yourself

Knowledge is power. Personal finance doesn’t have to be a mystery. Subscribe to this site. Read other personal finance blogs. I recommend:

You don’t have to agree with everything in a book to get something out of it. I read a lot of personal finance books—some are good, but many are not. Even the worst books usually have one or two things I can pull from them. Learn how to read a personal finance book so that you can pick and choose those pieces appropriate for your life.

Final Thoughts

Taking control of your finances can be intimidating— there’s so much to do—but it doesn’t have to be that way. One effective solution is to take a vacation day from work: designate one specific date as your personal Money Day. Use this day to finally set up Quicken on your computer, to open a retirement account, and to call around for a better deal on your insurance.

Six Personality Traits worth adopting

As humans, we often focus on those who are negative or toxic leaving it difficult to appreciate those who are positive and healthy. Seeking out individuals with healthy, positive traits, however, may naturally help us to stay clear (or at least clearer) of those who are toxic, who zap our energy or who make us feel badly. Further, the more we can surround ourselves with those who are positive and healthy, the more we may model those positive behaviors.
If you really think about it, once in awhile you come across a person who knocks you off your socks … legitimately. Maybe they have the best outlook on life, maybe they’re really wealthy but you would never know it, maybe they make you feel special. There’s a good chance that many of these people possess a few, if not all of the traits mentioned below. (Although I could probably list a dozen characteristics, I thought I’d list those that seem to be the rarest or most difficult to find in others.)

1. Selflessness: In a world where many people don’t have the time to be interested in others, selflessness is a quality that seems to be less and less common. People can be selfless in the time they give, the ability to listen, their level of patience and the love that they give. Those who are giving and generous in nature have the power to make others feel loved, appreciated, and special, while those who are self-absorbed tend to do the exact opposite.

2. Tolerance: People who are tolerant make us feel comfortable with who we are and special as individuals. All of us are different, and many of us have quirks and idiosyncrasies. After all, these differences make the world go round. Having the ability to accept people for who they are and not expect them to be who we want them to be is important in life, happiness, and in the health of our relationships.

3. Genuineness: Having the ability to be real, authentic, and honest is unique in a world where we put so much emphasis on the superficial. Feeling comfortable in your skin and being true to yourself is one of the most beautiful traits a person possess. To have a real relationship with someone requires honesty. It requires hearing and giving input or feedback that may not always be popular. It means having the strength to tell it like it is and not being afraid to face the consequences for doing so. It means loving people for who they really are, deep down, and not for what they appear to be.

4. Sensitivity: So often, we’re so focused on what’s important to us that we can forget about those around us. Those who are sensitive are often thoughtful, appreciative, and loving, in a way that makes you feel understood, valued, and respected. Often, sensitive people are also self-aware, making them mindful of how they impact others with what they do and say.

5. Integrity: Call me cynical, but I think this characteristic is especially difficult to find, especially in a time when people will do things that are underhanded to make an extra buck. (Bernie Madoff, can you hear me?) They expose their personal lives to the public so they can be famous (balloon boy’s dad and any other reality TV mongers). They do what feels good in the moment without necessarily thinking of the consequences (Tiger Woods). Integrity is a characteristic that is especially unique today.

6. Humility: Whether someone is super-smart, extremely talented, or drop-dead gorgeous, there’s something extra special about them if they don’t come across as though they know it all the time. Humility in those who possess extraordinary traits makes others feel special, too.

IQ EQ

Half intelligent is not intelligent. Being intellectual rarely is enough to be half intelligent. IQ’s do not measure intelligence but ‘intellect’. Everyone has a certain level of both intellect and intelligence. That doesn’t make either an applicable ‘moniker’ to apply to anyone. Rarely are people really with either one but somewhat. A 140 IQ might mean ‘genius’ by some standards but likely doesn’t make one intelligent if considering factors like ‘inner harmony’ and ‘self love’.

Intelligence is having the wisdom to know ‘thyself’ and, in the western world with its openness, to be able to manifest that with another who is a clear mirror meeting you as a clear mirror. Most of the world, particularly in the US achiever-capitalist system, intellectual achievements in schools are highly regarded over all else with the ‘work world’ overly obsessed with using that as a barometer for employment. Experience has shown other factors far out weighing the intellect as in work ethics, imagination, passion, loyalty, integrity and so forth. The measurement of ‘intellect’ is easier than going ‘deeper’ to other virtues, and it makes more money for everyone (particularly the ‘brain factories’).

That which can be attributed to the ‘emotional’ is perhaps more important. I have met many so called bright people, sometimes ‘intellectual’, who are completely lost in their self pity, self worth and all inner self enhancements including a deep self love. Intellectuals (and thugs) with undeveloped emotions have ruled the world. Religions have seduced the masse’s minds with their clever ability to manipulate thoughts and words with a mixture of immature emotions. Religious intellectuals of one degree or another have counted on the masses fear and lack of knowledge to manipulate them to be labeled one religion or another with threats of eternal payment for sins that are often ‘made up.’

Politicians use the ‘religious salesmen’ to corral the naive and gullible, including the intellectually oriented to espouse and follow ancient words from hypothetical male gods. From there, politicians with agendas can manipulate the minds already manipulated.

The ‘intellect’ without the balanced emotions can become a ‘hard wired prison’ that can’t see beyond the mind’s limited capacity. No ‘intellectual’ loves themselves without embracing the totality of emotions from sadness to joys of love. The ‘intellect’ is often in fear of the emotional, relying instead on his cleverness. The intelligent find the synthesis between both in harmony!

Poor is a ‘mind choice’, or a state of mind. Working at McDonald’s, for example, but with a smart state of mind, one can live very well, and upscale, depending on ‘choices’. Back in the old times of the 20th century, the mind was likely filled with stars of ‘accumulation’ of all that money could buy to make one happy. Happiness and inner joy has little to do with ‘money and things’. I left a good career on Wall St. 20 years ago while also living on the 40th floor of a hi-rise over Central Park, easy money, loads of fine dining, frequent trips to the West Coast, etc. Basically a life most Americans could only dream of. Loved it, but...
Chasing money, and having inner bliss with wisdom do not mix without diluting both. In most cases, false inner bliss needs money-money. Money is not an inherent problem but for the attachment, as it does block a creative life of love and compassion. Whether one is poor or rich, not being addicted or attached to many things including unneeded desires is clearly the pathway to an inner freedom that gets blocked by the stress and worries of maintaining an image and expensive life style.

I have never met a person of average intelligence who couldn’t live very well on a McDonald’s fast food ‘flipping burgers’ income at this early stage of the 21st century. It’s the desire and attachment for ‘I want this and that’, which puts people on a treadmill going no where but where they could have found it without all the hullabaloo. To everything there are of course exceptions but for the majority, life awaits inner discovery and self love. Self love isn’t buying whatever one wants to quench the thirst of the ego’s insatiable appetite.
Particularly in America at this time, most can choose for the first time ever, to live well and be an explorer of the peaks of love and what it brings. ‘Inner bankruptcy’, and denial of it, is common. Foreclosing the self is to sell out to accumulation. Always look to educate one’s inner self, and yet not ignoring the outer social world that needs your consciousness and participation. Giving to one’s inner wisdom, and giving back to the world are equally, albeit different, important. Living well on a McDonald’s type budget takes ‘creativity with common sense, self love, and letting go of old paradigms.

Habits for Balanced Living

Do you sometimes wonder whether your life is in balance? It is easy to know if you lead a balanced life because if you do then:
- you enjoy every moment and every second,

- you can cope with any difficulties,

- you can be happy without any reason to be happy,

- you can be yourself and love the person you are.
Today the world constantly tries to throw you out of balance and sometimes no matter what you do you still feel like your life is going in the wrong direction (I know I feel this way sometimes.) Balanced living might seem like one of those theoretical terms that nobody can put into practice but in fact there is nothing simpler than living a balanced life.

It might take some work at first but once you get in the flow and discover the simple ways to steer your life in your desired direction you will feel empowered. You will be inspired and energized by every day of your life. Your life will be full of amazing adventures and events that will make every day memorable. You won’t be wasting your life anymore or spending gloomy hours contemplating about the misfortunes that might have happened on your way.

Does balanced living mean that your life will be full of only positive people and events that will bring you happiness every moment of your life? Not at all.

Balanced living is when you can always offset any negative events in your life with positive ones. It is also when you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Balanced living is when you are happy working and playing equally. If you picture happiness and everything great in your life as a diamond, then any negative things that may happen are just the setting that makes this diamond shine only brighter.

If you want to live a balanced life then there are 5 essential habits that you need to develop.
Awareness and mindfulness. Awareness is the key to balanced living because it lets you see every moment of your life and appreciate it. A mindful person lives in the present and does not get obsessed with the future or the past. It’s important to plan for the future and learn from your mistakes in the past, but it is even more important to appreciate who you are right now and find joy in this state.

When you are aware of this moment you are calm and you do not make any decisions that you might regret later.

When you are mindful you are in balance with the universe.

Appreciation of your body. By “appreciation” I mean taking care of your body. If you are grateful for the very first gift that you received in your life (your body) then you must take care of it. It means making healthy choices in life, exercising and being generally active, eating a balanced and healthy diet, letting your body rest when it’s tired and pampering it every once in a while.

Your body is the tool that lets you experience so many wonderful moments in life and you need to do your best when taking care of it.

Clearly, balanced living is not possible without a balanced body.

Creativity. Every day we face a lot of challenges and choices in life. Some of these challenges might be easy while others will be more difficult. If you approach each of your challenges with creativity then your life will be filled with adventures. Conversely, if you turn off your creativity, then your life will turn into torture.

Creativity is a wonderful tool that lets us turn our dreams into reality, turn play into work and work into play, and enjoy life even when it seems empty.

Creative people are the ones who can make the exquisite setting for the diamond of their life.

Patience. With patience we can overcome almost anything whilst without it we can ruin almost anything.

Patience can help us turn our dreams into reality (losing weight, starting a business or blog). It can help us be better parents, spouses, friends and even strangers (sometimes a smile from an understanding stranger can make the biggest difference when you are having a bad day). If you are patient you do not have to worry about the minutes spent in traffic or in the line at the grocery store. With patience you can see results in all your endeavors and you do not have to spend the precious time of your life getting mad or infuriated.

Patience leads to mindfulness and mindfulness brings you in balance.

Simplicity. Simplicity is probably the most important part of life balance. When you build your life around simplicity you reduce the number of out-of-balance things that can disrupt your happy living.

In balance everything is simple. There are two opposites (like black and white) and you just have to pick something in the middle:
Simplify you work schedule so that you do not have to think about a hundred things at the same time.

Simplify your relationships by connecting with people you truly care about and getting rid of the ones you don’t.

Simplify your diet by choosing simple healthy ingredients that are part of balanced nutrition.

Simplify your social media exposure and enjoy living life and getting things done rather than wasting time online.

Simplicity makes life balance simple.
These habits have been my lifeline for many years and I cannot imagine a balanced (and happy) life without them.
Living in balance is easy and very rewarding because your life becomes the one of joy, happiness and serenity. If you put some time and effort into turning your life into a balanced direction then you too will live a truly Zen life.

Free Your Mind


You have no idea the wonder and magnificence you can achieve by letting go of the self-induced restriction that we call intellectual boundaries. That is precisely what magician and other sorcerers were trying to get across in their own humble ways. If you free your mind, it is implied that the rest will follow.




You are not bound by anything, so why are you so afraid to wonder and create. If you remain open you can achieve magnificence as well as such wondrous enlightened wonders.



Remain open to anything and everything and you will achieve glorious attributes. The whole is not yet discovered, and it probably would never be. That is what the adventure of is to all that remain open to it.

Forget to Forget

Remember to forget, but don’t forget to forget! Most of all don’t forget to remember. Remember the thoughts and moments to bring joy and positivity. Life is best when reset to begin each day fresh and unencumbered by the trials of the past. The negatives need positive energy to dilute their clouding each moment. Remember to chip away at negatives and allow them to lose energy. Never forget to remember the good memorable moments letting the best forgotten moments have less influence.




The following is a simple meditation exercise to reset the mind and heart:



Lie down on your back. Keep your eyes closed and breathe in, visualizing great light

entering from your head into your body, as if a sun has just risen close to your head - golden light pouring into your head. Be hollow and the golden light is pouring into your head, and going, going, going, deep, deep, and going out through your toes. When you breathe out, visualize another thing: darkness entering through your toes, a great dark river entering through your toes, coming up, and going out through the head. Do slow, deep breathing, so you can

visualize. Go very slowly.



Breathing in, let golden light come into you through your head, the golden light is waiting to cleanse your whole body and will make it absolutely full of creativity. This is male energy. Then when you exhale, let darkness, the darkest you can conceive, like a dark night, riverlike, come from your toes upwards - this is feminine energy, it will sooth you, it will make you receptive, and calm you, it will give you rest - and let it go out of the head. Then inhale again, and golden light enters in. Do it for twenty minutes early in the morning.



And the second best time is when you are going back to sleep, at night. Lie down on the bed, relax for a few minutes. When you start feeling that you are wavering between sleep and waking, just in that middle, start the process again and continue for twenty minutes. If you fall asleep doing it, it is best, because the impact will remain in the subconscious and will go on working.

• When you are working, stop thinking about when you will complete the work. If you do that, surprisingly you will complete the work even before your expected time of completion. More over, you will be very much satisfied with your work. You will instantly feel light and happy.

• When someone is talking to you, give all your ears. Yes, I know, it is a strain but you will master the art of listening attentively and you will also learn how to stop the conversation without hurting anyone.

• Another important area for stress is lack of money or shortage of money. Let me tell you one thing: You will not be able to solve your financial problem by worrying about it. Why Invest in Laughter?


It is impossible to worry while you're laughing. Humor cuts stress levels in half. Laughing helps you to stay happy and healthy and helps you return to good health when ill. Laughter increases, by 20%, the activity of killer cells within the body which serve to destroy viruses and tumor cells. Train yourself to look for the comedy in your chaos. A sense of humor is the number one survival skill.

Off Limits Communication


There are no limits to an open, healthy communication. Open communication assumes ‘no double jeopardy’ involved which means when honest communication is exercised between one to another, there is always assumed to be the most positive response forthcoming. In the courts of law, one can’t be tried for the same offense twice. In open communication there never is an offense. In an ‘on and off communication’ that serves one or the other to withhold information, there is ‘full jeopardy potential!



In high conscious partnering’s or marriages, two people endlessly merge with all emotion and information in harmony with each other. ‘Limited Partnerships’, as used in Wall St. lingo, mean in relationships that their are unspoken limits to certain information. When two people agree that it’s best to withdraw certain information, at least there is a consensual agreement. So called ‘understood limited communication’ is not sufficient communication for a harmonious connection. Couples frequently find themselves ‘dug into a hole’ of reluctant survival often kept in the ‘hole’ because of fear or the courage to

move in an upward direction. Moving upward may upset a comfort level even if the best choice.



There are never ‘guilty parties’ in open communication. Agreeing to disagree compensates for the temptation to withhold information that the other should know. Full uninhibited love solves all communication problems. Fractures in ‘love connections’ are mendable but rarely fixed. Conditional love is the norm in all but a rare few in marriages and love affairs. Maturing internally is to love the self and being able to manifest it with another. Maturing in the ‘outer world’ has nothing to do with ‘internal maturation’.



Females in relationships have no reason to not communicate except when the other chooses to have a closet for secrets of the mind, body, and emotions. Likewise, males don’t either, but in reality hold the ‘lever to communication’ and usually choose not to ‘lay all the cards on the table’ due to failures of self love. Success in relationships that are ‘standards for the human peaks of conscious relationships for the world to see’ are always ones in full communication and love. ‘A failure to communicate’ just needs a ‘let go’ into full love.
